You meet an enthusiastic researcher who is interested in the underwater remains of the great earthquake of 1692. He plans to get to those with a new device one of his Acadèmie Nationale contacts has obtained - a contraption called a diving bell. Interested in a little salvage operation? There should be minimal risk involved.
To the surprise of probably nobody except your mission contact, this mission turns out to be anything but without risk: it is a large sea battle against half a dozen enemies, all between level 34 and 38. They will be divided into two groups of three, with the group that's farther away attacking the research vessels you have to protect. They have a few escort ships of their own, but these are damaged already and will soon be sunk, so you should hurry to their aid. You will have three NPC allies that spawn near you, but leave those to engage the nearer group of enemies (possibly helping them by throwing some broadsides at the pirates as you sail past them).
You finish the mission by talking to the Académie researcher who has supplied the diving bell - your initial contact seems to have lost his will for field research all of a sudden...
