While your scholar friend is looking for clues in the Professor's house, you should go and ask the townspeople if they've seen anything.

This sends you to talk to two NPCs in the port. One of them is the bartender, the other can also start you off on an unrelated story-line (see Looking for Clues). Return to the scholar after you've talked to both and tell him/her what you've learned.
