History

Strategy and Use

Slow to turn and very slow to accelerate, this is a ship you need to prepare your course in advance so your trading trips are bearable. If you plan the route to minimise manoeuvering, the fast speed makes up for the sluggish performance you get otherwise. The huge capacity for the level makes it a worthwhile addition to your dock.

Tactics

If you get caught while travelling, it's best to make use of the speed to run. While you have decent armament and hull/broadside armour strength, fighting in this isn't advisable due to its shortcomings in manoeuverability. Consider nimble rigs (to improve turn rate in encounters) or lightweight halyards (for faster acceleration) for the sail upgrade slots.

Also, consider using the Large Lightweight Rig here. This outfitting adds +10% to the Maximum Open Sea speed of large ships, making the 'Santiago' Trader's Galleon one of the fastest ships a trader can get.

Comparable Ships

Comparable to the 'Santiago' Galleon, but its superior design and construction allow it to carry more cargo. The 'Mignone' Indiaman is another alternative, with better armament, acceleration, and broadside armour but which lacks the excellent speed and strong hull of this ship.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Large cargo capacity; expert spotters (10.0mi O.S. Spotting)

Even though a Huge hull required to build this, it is classed as a Large ship.
