History

The brig is one of the most versatile ship designs in the Age of Sail. They were used as merchantmen, whalers, transports, exploration vessels as well as warships. Having only two masts allowed them to use smaller crews. Having only one main deck allowed for a beamy stable hull design. This also limited the size and amount of guns, thus they are not rated vessels. Also they are not true ships, a true ship has three stepped masts (fore, main & mizzen masts) which are square rigged or "ship rigged". A brig has a ship-rigged fore mast and main mast, unlike a ketch which has a ship rigged main mast and mizzen.

A snow brig has a small false mast attached to the main mast to hold the mizzen sail on its gaffs. A true brig such as the 'Lexington' brig has the mizzen sail attached directly to the main mast.

Strategy and Use

The 'Lexington' brig is a brig-of-war, heavily armed for its class of ships and capable of convoy escort duty, troop transport, blockade enforcement, conveying dignitaries or other duties. It would not stand in the line of battle but serve as an auxilary vessel to the fleet.

Tactics

The 'Lexington' brig has good all round performance for its level. Players who want a ship which can both haul cargo and be used for missions are well advised to choose the 'Lexington' brig. A bonus is that this vessel has stern chasers, unlike the 'Curieuse' Snow brig. if armed and armored correctly, in the hands of a expert sailor this ship can be a hard nut to crack. even if you are lvl 27 you can take down lvl 42 npc's with just a emergency repair and a hull patch. even throw it only has 8 guns per side its reloading rate is quite fast so u can get more shots out. the best way to use it is to go stright at the enemy ship forceing it to turn to its broad side and then blasting away with heavy or bronze cannon balls.

Variants

Other variants of the Lexington:

'Lexington' Brig (Captured)

The easiest way for a pirate to get one of these fine ships is to take the mission Support Your Local Farmer from Carbaneras. There are multiple ships in the mission but you get help from AI pirates so its not hard to grab a Lex and finish the mission. You can also let it fail and exit to arm and upgrade your new Lex and try it again.

Also seen at Florida offshore and in some quests in Whitby.

Comparable Ships

'Curieuse' Snow, 'Cruizer' Snow, 'van Hoorn' Snow

Distinguishing Characteristics

Great all around ship for the level. 6 swivel guns make dropping enemy crew a breeze, and you have stern chasers to make kiting ships or escaping from ships much easier.
