The Chaloupe canonnière or gunboat has a single, heavy bow chaser. Despite her unique characteristics, she is not suitable for most battles.

History

Originally launched off of the larger ships of the line, in the 18th century, longboats evolved into very small support craft. By 1750, they were authorized to carry 4 to 6 half pound swivels and by 1795, the swivels were replaced by a single carronade, 18- and 24- pounders for those belonging to a ship of the line, and 12- pounders for smaller ships.

Strategy and Use

Gunboats were typically not employed singly but in groups. They might be assigned to harbor patrol/defense to prevent enemy cutting out parties or might lead an attack against an enemy harbor. In PotBS they are best used in special events such as races, duels and skirmishes.

This boat can not be used to dodge PvP - Yet it says "PvE Only", you can still be attacked by other players in it. You may not, though, attack other players in this.

Tactics

Fast turning, and fast acceleration makes for this a quick turning ship. Keep your target in front of you, fire, turn and move out of range, turn back, fire again. Not a fast way to deal damage, but the foregun has a reload time of 10 sec, not the 45 it would otherwise call for. Useful if you have Small Long Barreled Guns, because you could push the range beyond 800+ yards.

Distinguishing Characteristics

• A simple boat; no hold, and an open deck.
• A low, simple lateen rig.
• Has devoted its entire cargo capacity to the structural modification required to mount the single, forward-mounted, medium-caliber gun.
