A small ship with 4 deck guns. Although combat-capable, she is only dangerous in packs and can be readily defeated by a Halifax schooner.

History

The galeas is a small type of trade ship, which was common in the Baltic Sea and North Sea during the 17th to the early 20th centuries. The characteristics of the ships depend somewhat from where the ship originated. Swedish (and Finnish) versions had two masts and were rigged as ketchs during the 18th century. Later on there were larger versions, which could be equipped with three masts and be rigged as ships. The galeas was developed from the Dutch galliot, which was rigged in a similar way, but was equipped with a rounded stern. The Swedish galliot was sometimes called "Dutch hoy" or "English dogger. The galeas has a galliot's rig, but a square stern.

The Hiorten galeas was built in Sweden in 1692 and used for mail runs between its home country and Germany. In May, 1999 a full scale working replica was built and is used for the same purpose today. It is the only working mail packetboat in the world.

Strategy and Use

Small coastal trader and mail carrier.

Tactics

Due to its small size, limited firepower and slow Open Sea speed of 59 this vessel is not suited for combat or even non-combat player events.

Comparable Ships

In size and shape the Hiorten is closest to the schooners. She is shorter and broader than the small schooner the shape of the hull should give her more cargo capacity than the small schooner but at the price of speed. Short and fat, the Hiorten is designed for good cargo capacity in a small ship and the smallest crew size requirement. Very light armament means she should stay in safe water, since she can neither run nor fight well.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Twin jibs before a single mainsail and twin gaff sails make this a handy sailer in all but the roughest seas.

Sources

The ship was built using several plans from F. Chapmans [1] and a web site about the replica of the ship [2]. The model was built by Michael O'Dwyer.
