History
Lanteen rigged vessels of all types were a common sight in the Mediterranean and to an extent in other seas, particularly in Asiatic waters of the Near East (i.e. Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean). El Dragon is merely a small merchant bark outfitted in the Mediterranean style and operating outside of her historical waters.
Strategy and Use
This level 10 ship is a bridge for players wanting to move from a small hulled single mast sloop to a medium hulled two masted ship of the xebec style (i.e. fast, lightly armored and guns). Players wanting a "tank" would be better served waiting until level 12 to change to a 'van Hoorn' Snow brig.
Tactics
A fast pursuit ship that has exceptional upwind sailing capacities but poor downwind performance. She's armed with a decent compliment of lightweight guns for dealing sustained close-range damage. As such she is an improvement over the 'Bermuda' Sloop but definitely inferior in firepower to the 'Mediator' Cutter. Her lateen rigging is vulnerable to dismantling shot. The large hold makes her a good smuggling ship. The small crew means she is not good at boarding unless equipped with hammocks and the target propperly prepared by riddling with canister or grapeshot.
Variants
'El Dragon' Mastercraft Barque
Comparable Ships
'La Diligente' Tartane and 'Corsair' Xebec for similar lanteen rigged vessels. ==Distinguishing Characteristics== A wide merchant hull with two lanteen rigged masts gives her the appearance of being a small xebec. In fact her hull could be rigged as a brig.
